Root says Fleming’s vision and experience influenced his decision to lead England again ahead of the Pakistan Test series.
England batter Joe Root has revealed that the appointment of former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as England’s new Test head coach was a major factor behind his decision to return as the national team’s Test captain.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) recently announced Fleming as the new head coach of England’s men’s Test side, while Root was named captain, replacing Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes respectively. The decision marks the beginning of Root’s second stint in charge of England’s red-ball team.
Following Ben Stokes’ retirement from international cricket during England’s home Test series against New Zealand last month, vice-captain Harry Brook had emerged as a strong contender for the leadership role.
However, England management ultimately opted for the experienced Root, with managing director Rob Key indicating that the opportunity had arrived earlier than expected for Brook.
Root previously led England’s Test team between 2017 and 2022. During that period, he oversaw 65 matches, recording 27 victories, 27 defeats and 11 draws. Despite the mixed results, the 35-year-old believes he is now in a much stronger position to take on the responsibilities of captaincy.
The experienced batter highlighted Fleming’s cricketing knowledge and leadership background as significant reasons behind his decision.
Root said he was encouraged by Fleming’s understanding of the game, his assessment of England’s current position, and his plans for the team’s future development.
According to Root, Fleming’s extensive experience as both a player and coach gives England an excellent opportunity to build something special in the coming years.
He expressed enthusiasm about working closely with the former New Zealand skipper and helping the team achieve its long-term goals.
Root’s first challenge as captain will be a three-match home Test series against Pakistan, scheduled from August 19 to September 13.
However, Fleming will miss the series because of family commitments in New Zealand. Former England opener Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach during that period.
Despite the absence of Fleming and a limited preparation window following the conclusion of The Hundred on August 16, Root remains optimistic. He acknowledged the short turnaround before the opening Test at Headingley but stressed the importance of making the most of England’s two available training days as they prepare for a competitive series against Pakistan.
