The Chinese automaker has secured regulatory attention for a low-cost electric scooter as it prepares to introduce extended-range motorcycles under its Cinnox brand.
Chery is preparing to expand beyond passenger vehicles into electric two-wheelers, with a budget electric moped appearing in the latest product catalogue released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The development comes as the automaker advances plans for electric motorcycles featuring extended-range technology.
The newly listed moped uses a simple step-through design that closely resembles Yamaha’s Vino scooter series. However, instead of a conventional petrol engine, the vehicle features an electric motor integrated into the rear wheel. Chery has yet to announce its official specifications, pricing or launch date.
The model also reflects a long-standing trend in China’s entry-level electric scooter market, where manufacturers frequently share components and use familiar designs to reduce production costs. Similar electric mopeds are available through Chinese online retailers for approximately 2,000 yuan, or around $300.
These affordable models generally use lead-acid batteries with capacities below 2 kWh, delivering a typical riding range of 50 kilometres or less. While Chery has not confirmed whether its new scooter will follow the same specifications, the vehicle could help the company establish a presence in the price-sensitive segment.
Chery Expands Its Two-Wheeler Manufacturing Plans
The company may also use the entry-level scooter to develop production expertise before introducing more advanced electric motorcycles. Chery’s commercial vehicle division reportedly received government approval for motorcycle manufacturing in late September, indicating progress towards its broader two-wheeler ambitions.
At a technology event held at its headquarters in Wuhu, the company presented two upcoming motorcycles under its Cinnox brand. These models suggest that Chery intends to compete in more than just the affordable scooter category.
New Cinnox Motorcycles Feature Extended-Range Technology
One of the planned models is an electric adventure scooter with a claimed driving range of 150 to 200 kilometres. Chery has also mentioned automotive-charger compatibility, although it has not clarified whether the vehicle supports AC or DC charging.
The second motorcycle, named Grow C3, is an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) cruiser. Chery describes it as an AI-enabled motorcycle designed partly for outdoor recreation. Its vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality is intended to supply external electricity, making it potentially useful for camping without relying on a separate generator.
As China’s passenger car market faces intensifying competition, electric two-wheelers could provide Chery with another avenue for growth.
