In a crucial warm-up game leading up to the Asia Cup, the Chinese women’s basketball team showcased their dominance by defeating long-time rivals Japan 101-92 in Foshan.
The victory was especially meaningful for China, as it marked a turnaround from their earlier losses to Japan in the 2024 warm-up series in Xi’an. With this strong performance, China set an intense tone for their rematch later in the week.
China’s performance was anchored by standout contributions from their towering centers, Han Xu and Zhang Ziyu. Both players recorded double-doubles, with Han securing 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Zhang matching her with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Yang Shuyu also made a significant impact, adding 17 points to the scoreboard. On the Japanese side, Mai Kawai led the effort with 13 points, demonstrating her skills despite the defeat.
The match began with a tightly contested first quarter, with China holding a slim 26-25 lead. The momentum shifted in the second quarter when Zhang Ziyu found her rhythm, scoring 10 vital points and helping China enter halftime with a 49-44 advantage.
China expanded their lead in the third quarter through a 10-4 run, increasing the gap to 14 points. Japan attempted to close the margin by hitting five three-pointers, cutting China’s lead to just 10 points before the final period.
However, China maintained their composure under pressure. Despite Japan narrowing the deficit to seven points early in the fourth quarter, China responded swiftly with a 9-2 run, ensuring their control of the game until the final whistle.
After the match, Chinese head coach Gong Luming acknowledged Japan’s strengths, particularly their speed and long-range shooting.
He expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, especially their advantage in height and strength, and praised the contributions from all players on offense.
Still, he pointed out the need to improve perimeter defense, indicating plans for adjustments before the next game.
With the two teams set to meet again on Friday in Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province, anticipation is high. As both sides continue refining their strategies for the Asia Cup, fans are eager to see whether China can maintain their edge or if Japan will bounce back in the rematch.
