China Stands Firm Against US Trade, Tariff Threats: Spokesperson

China has reiterated its stance that while it does not seek confrontation, it will not back down if a trade and tariff war is forced upon it. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made these remarks during a press briefing on Thursday, responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed threat to impose additional tariffs on Chinese imports.

Lin emphasized that China has always advocated for mutual respect and fair trade practices but will take firm action to defend its national interests. “Engaging in necessary countermeasures is not only about safeguarding China’s sovereignty and developmental rights, but also about preserving global fairness, upholding the multilateral trading system, and protecting the shared interests of the international community,” he said.

He pointed out that the actions taken by the U.S. are unilateral and reflect a disregard for international trade norms. According to Lin, such behavior is not only detrimental to China but also threatens global economic stability. “A just cause enjoys the support of many,” he noted, stressing that the U.S. approach is becoming increasingly unpopular and is likely to fail.

China, he asserted, will never remain passive if the legitimate rights of its people or the foundations of international trade are jeopardized. “If the United States chooses to escalate a trade or tariff war, China will respond with resolve and will fight to the end,” Lin stated.

Throughout the press briefing, the term “trade” underscored the core concern — that the U.S.’s aggressive tactics are disrupting international commerce. Lin criticized Washington for prioritizing its own agenda over the global common good, warning that such moves represent hegemonic ambitions that could further isolate the United States.

China’s position remains clear: it seeks peaceful and fair trade relations but is fully prepared to defend its interests in the face of any economic aggression. The message was unambiguous — if the U.S. continues down the path of tariff hikes and trade conflict, China will stand firm and not flinch.
