Christian Bale has set the record straight after a scene in his upcoming film “The Bride!” drew unexpected comparisons to his 1992 Disney musical “Newsies.” The actor, now 52, addressed the remarks during an interview with BuzzFeed ahead of the film’s release, reacting with a mix of amusement and clarification.
Bale laughed at the comparison but emphasized the major differences. “I would never have thought anybody would relate Newsies to The Bride! That’s …,” he said. “But wait, big difference. Newsies is a musical. This is not a musical.”
The scene in question involves high-energy movement, which Bale explained is driven by narrative intensity rather than dance. “This is something where it’s just a ridiculously energetic expression, with possession,” he said. “You’ll understand when you watch the whole movie, but it ain’t no musical at all, you know?”
Describing the sequence as “spontaneous,” Bale added that it involves heavy footwear, not dance attire. “It’s a spontaneous dance of protest that leads into serious protest with serious consequences,” he noted, highlighting the scene’s dramatic purpose.
When asked about returning to musicals, Bale was definitive. “I don’t think I’ll ever step foot in a musical again in my life,” he said, though he added a small caveat: “Of course, never say never, but almost never say never on this one.”
With “The Bride!” set to release soon, fans can expect a thrilling, intense performance from Bale—one that’s worlds apart from the song-and-dance charm of Newsies.
