Los Angeles, October 10, 2025 – Academy Award-winning actor Cillian Murphy recently delighted fans by unveiling his personal list of all-time favorite films during a visit to the legendary Criterion Closet.
The Oppenheimer star, known for his powerful performances in both indie gems and blockbuster hits, shared which cinematic masterpieces have shaped his artistic vision over the years.
During his appearance at The Criterion Collection — a renowned film distribution company dedicated to preserving and restoring classic and contemporary cinema — Murphy handpicked several titles he considers true “classics.” The first on his list was La Piscine, a French film he described as one that will “make you want to move to France.” He praised its subtle storytelling, noting that its power lies in “what isn’t said, all the subject, and the energies happening between the characters.”
Next, Murphy selected Rosetta, directed by the Dardenne brothers, calling them “tremendous” filmmakers. “It’ll make you cry,” he admitted, adding that it perfectly aligns with his taste in emotionally raw cinema.
The third choice was a John Cassavetes box set. Murphy shared that Cassavetes’ work deeply influenced him during a difficult period in his early career in America, helping him reconnect with authentic, character-driven storytelling.
For his fourth pick, Murphy chose Code Unknown, a 2000 drama he called “formative.” He said its unforgettable opening sequence left a lasting mark on him as an actor.
He concluded his visit with a nod to Wes Anderson, selecting a vibrant collection of Anderson’s films, which he described as a “beautiful thing.”
While these classics continue to inspire Murphy, his latest project Steve, released on Netflix on October 3, is captivating audiences worldwide — proving that both his taste and talent continue to set cinematic standards.
