Citizens Disappointed as Pakistan Raises Petroleum Levy

Islamabad – April 16, 2025: Citizens are disappointed because despite a sharp decline in global oil prices, the government of Pakistan has chosen to raise the petroleum levy and keep domestic fuel prices unchanged for the second half of April — a move that has drawn strong criticism from citizens across the country.

Hopes were high among citizens for a reduction in fuel costs, especially as international markets showed a downward trend. However, the government’s decision to increase the petroleum levy has sparked frustration and disappointment. Many citizens had expected some relief during these economically challenging times.

According to ARY News, the petroleum levy on petrol has gone up by Rs8.02 per liter, bringing the total to Rs78.02 per liter. The levy on high-speed diesel has increased by Rs7.01, reaching Rs77.01 per liter. Kerosene oil saw a rise of Rs7.99 per liter in levy, now totaling Rs18.95. For light diesel oil, the petroleum levy was raised by Rs7.62 per liter, amounting to Rs15.37. HOBC (High Octane Blending Component) also saw a Rs8.02 per liter hike, taking the total levy to Rs78.02.

Fuel prices, however, remain the same: petrol at Rs254.63 per liter and high-speed diesel at Rs258.64 per liter. This decision follows a statement from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who confirmed that petroleum prices would not be reduced for now. He added that the funds collected through the petroleum levy would be used for development and uplift projects.

But many citizens are not convinced. “We are already burdened by inflation. Increasing the petroleum levy without reducing prices is unfair,” said one frustrated citizen in Rawalpindi. Another citizen in Karachi echoed similar sentiments, saying, “It feels like we are being punished for expecting relief.”

As the cost of living continues to rise, citizens are calling on the government to reconsider its decision and prioritize public welfare over revenue generation through the petroleum levy.
