Islamabad, July 10, 2025 — Thick clouds are set to blanket Islamabad on Friday, July 11, with increased chances of rain and thundershowers, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
The capital city is bracing for a wet weekend as the monsoon system gains intensity over the upper parts of the country.
Mehr Fatima, forecasting officer at PMD, confirmed that cloudy conditions accompanied by rain-wind or thundershowers — possibly with isolated heavyfalls — are expected in Islamabad and its adjoining areas throughout Friday. She also noted that similar clouds dominated the Islamabad skyline on Thursday, with intermittent rain activity and thunder reported across the city.
The persistent clouds over Islamabad are being fueled by an ongoing monsoon system, reinforced by a westerly wave affecting the upper and central parts of Pakistan. This dual weather activity has intensified rainfall across several regions and heightened the risk of flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
The PMD issued a nationwide alert covering July 10–11, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall that may trigger flash floods in streams and nullahs of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, and northern parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Urban flooding is also a concern in low-lying sectors of Islamabad, especially areas near drainage channels and underdeveloped neighborhoods.
The department urged citizens to exercise caution during the wet spell, especially commuters and residents of flood-prone zones. Landslides and mudslides are also likely in hilly terrains of Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
On a broader scale, Friday’s forecast includes rain-wind/thundershower activity in Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, with isolated heavyfalls predicted in northeast Punjab and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Rainfall data from the past 24 hours shows light showers in various parts of Islamabad — including Bokra (9mm), Golra (7mm), City (4mm), Saidpur (3mm), and Airport (1mm). Though moderate, these showers indicate that moisture-laden clouds are firmly parked over the capital.
With a combination of monsoon currents and westerly disturbances converging, Islamabad is expected to remain under a thick layer of clouds into the weekend, setting the stage for more rain, cooler temperatures, and potential waterlogging in saturated zones.
