The persistent cold wave in Islamabad shows no signs of abating as the federal capital recorded minimum temperatures at or below zero degrees Celsius for the fifth consecutive day.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (Met Office), the prevailing cold and dry conditions are expected to persist across most parts of the country, including Islamabad and neighboring Rawalpindi, in the coming days. Very cold and partly cloudy weather is forecast for hilly areas, while light rain and snowfall over mountains are anticipated in northwestern Balochistan during the night. Central and southern Punjab are likely to experience light fog at night.
The cold weather has significantly affected daily life in Islamabad, with residents bracing for freezing temperatures and bundling up to combat the chill. The Met Office has advised citizens to prepare for the prolonged cold spell, particularly those living in areas prone to frost.
Medical experts have also urged the public to adopt precautionary measures to safeguard their health. “The intensity of the cold can lead to respiratory and flu-related illnesses. It is important to dress warmly, especially for children and the old-age, who are more vulnerable,” a local doctor advised. People are being encouraged to limit outdoor exposure and ensure adequate heating in their homes to prevent cold-related ailments.
Meanwhile, the extreme weather has posed challenges to low-income households, many of whom struggle to secure fuel or adequate heating arrangements. Local authorities and welfare organizations are being urged to step up efforts to provide assistance to those in need.
Elsewhere in the country, regions with mountainous terrain are bracing for snowfall, with travel disruptions anticipated in affected areas. Residents of these regions are advised to exercise caution, particularly during nighttime travel.
As Islamabad continues to experience sub-zero temperatures, the cold wave serves as a stark reminder of the harshness of winter, necessitating preparedness and community support to minimize its impact on vulnerable populations.
