Islamabad, December 11, 2025 – The Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) has unveiled Pakistan’s first locally developed Electric Vehicle (EV) technology, designed in collaboration with technology partner AGECO (Pvt.) Ltd.

This milestone marks a significant step toward promoting clean, affordable, and sustainable mobility solutions in the country.

The new EV technology, launched under the brand name ECONOMIA, features Electric Conversion Kits for retrofitting existing petrol vehicles, including two-wheelers and rickshaws, into fully electric, zero-emission vehicles. This innovation offers a practical solution for reducing urban pollution while making transportation more cost-effective.

The launch ceremony at the COMSATS Secretariat was attended by Romina Khurshid, Coordinator to the Prime Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, along with ambassadors and high commissioners from Ghana, Iran, Malaysia, Palestine, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, and Zimbabwe, senior government officials, and representatives from the private sector and international organizations.

As part of the event, COMSATS and AGECO delivered EV-converted rickshaws to M/S Imperial Engineering Company, marking the first commercial deployment under a recently signed MoU and paving the way for broader adoption of retrofitted EVs.

Speaking at the event, Romina Khurshid emphasized Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change and the public health risks posed by air pollution. She lauded COMSATS and AGECO for offering an indigenous, cost-effective solution that supports environmental protection, public health, and economic growth.

COMSATS Executive Director Ambassador Dr. Muhammad Nafees Zakaria highlighted the potential benefits, including a reduction in CO2 emissions from 32 million motorcycles and rickshaws, saving fuel imports worth over US$ 3.78 billion annually, and generating carbon credits valued between US$ 2–15 million. The initiative is also expected to create jobs, encourage innovation, and advance multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

AGECO CEO Engr. Aslam Azad praised the partnership with COMSATS, emphasizing its role in driving national innovation and sustainable development. COMSATS plans to expand such collaborations to other Global South member states, promoting affordable green technology adoption regionally.
