Most successful coach in Croatian football history steps down after nearly nine years in charge following Croatia’s World Cup defeat to Portugal.

Croatia’s long-serving head coach Zlatko Dalic has resigned from his position following the national team’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an end to one of the most successful eras in the country’s football history.

The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) confirmed on Wednesday that Dalic had informed federation president Marijan Kustic of his decision to step down. His resignation comes shortly after Croatia suffered a 2-1 defeat against Portugal in the Round of 32 of the World Cup, ending their campaign earlier than expected.

Dalic leaves the role after nearly nine years at the helm of the Croatian national team. During his tenure, he transformed Croatia into one of the most competitive teams in international football and guided the nation to several historic achievements on the global stage.

In a statement issued by the federation, Dalic reflected on his time with the national team and described the decision to resign as the most difficult of his coaching career. He highlighted the pride he felt in Croatia’s achievements, including major tournament successes, memorable victories, and the strong bond developed between the team and its supporters.

The 58-year-old coach was appointed in October 2017 after replacing Ante Cacic. Within a year, he led Croatia to the 2018 FIFA World Cup final, where the team finished as runners-up. He later guided the side to third place at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and a runner-up finish in the 2023 UEFA Nations League.

These accomplishments earned Dalic a place in Croatian football history as the nation’s most successful coach. Under his leadership, Croatia secured three major international medals, a feat unmatched by any previous manager.

The 2026 World Cup marked the first major tournament during Dalic’s reign in which Croatia failed to secure a top-three finish. Following his departure, Croatian media reports suggest that former Croatia manager Slaven Bilic and current under-21 coach Ivica Olic are among the leading contenders to take over the national team.

Dalic’s exit closes a remarkable chapter for Croatian football, leaving behind a legacy of consistency, success, and international recognition.
