Navi Mumbai, October 20, 2025 – Sri Lanka Women held their nerve to clinch a dramatic 7-run victory over Bangladesh in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup (CWCW) 2025, eliminating their Asian rivals from the tournament after a pulsating finish in Navi Mumbai on Monday.
Defending a modest total of 203, Sri Lanka’s captain Chamari Athapaththu produced a sensational final over, taking three wickets and conceding just one run to restrict Bangladesh to 195/9. The thrilling finish sealed Sri Lanka’s third win of the tournament and kept their semi-final hopes alive.
Bangladesh looked on course for victory with Nigar Sultana Joty (77) and Sharmin Akter (64)* building a solid partnership. However, the team crumbled under pressure in the final moments as Athapaththu (4/42) dismantled the middle order with her late burst. Sugandika Kumari (2/29) and Udeshika Prabodhani (1/29) also played key supporting roles in Sri Lanka’s bowling attack.
Earlier, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 202 despite a strong start. Hasini Perera top-scored with 85, while Athapaththu (46) and Nilakshika Silva (37) contributed valuable runs. Perera’s fluent knock, featuring 13 fours and a six, was the backbone of Sri Lanka’s innings, though regular wickets in the final overs prevented them from posting a bigger total.
For Bangladesh, Shorna Akter (3/27) led the bowling attack brilliantly, supported by Rabeya Khatun (2/39), while Marufa Akter, Nishita Akter, and Nahida Akter chipped in with a wicket each.
Bangladesh’s chase had early hiccups, slipping to 44/3, before a fighting 82-run partnership between Sharmin and Joty revived hopes. Yet, the late collapse under Athapaththu’s brilliance dashed their semi-final dreams.
Sri Lanka now move up the table and will face Pakistan on October 24, while Bangladesh will take on India on October 26 in their final group-stage match.
