Cyclone SHAKHTI brings thunderstorms to Karachi, Sindh

Islamabad, October 4, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh alert stating that the developing Cyclone ‘SHAKHTI’ is expected to cause thunderstorms and rainfall in Karachi as well as several districts of Sindh.

According to the PMD, Cyclone ‘SHAKHTI’ in the northeast Arabian Sea has continued its westward movement over the last 12 hours. The system has now intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and is centered near Latitude 22.0N & Longitude 65.0E, approximately 390 kilometers south-southwest of Karachi.

The storm is likely to move towards the northwest and adjoining central north Arabian Sea by October 5, before recurving towards the east-northeast in the following 24 hours and weakening gradually.

Under the influence of Cyclone SHAKHTI, wind-thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall are likely in Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Jamshoro, Hub, Lasbella, Awaran, Kech, and isolated areas of Karachi Division. Sea conditions will remain rough to very rough, accompanied by squally winds of 40–50 km/h, gusting up to 55 km/h along the Sindh coast. Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the open sea until October 5.

Wind speeds near the center of the storm may reach 90–100 km/h, gusting to 110 km/h on October 4, with further intensification expected up to 125 km/h over the next 36 hours. Sea conditions will remain very rough to high across the central and north Arabian Sea during this period, posing a risk to maritime activity.

The PMD’s Cyclone Warning Center in Karachi continues to monitor Cyclone ‘SHAKHTI’ closely and has urged provincial disaster management authorities to remain on high alert and follow timely advisories.
