Dan Christian, the Sydney Thunder’s assistant coach, has made a remarkable return to professional cricket after coming out of retirement. The 41-year-old all-rounder will help bolster the injury-depleted Thunder side following the unfortunate injuries to key players Cameron Bancroft and Daniel Sams.
Christian, who hasn’t played professional cricket since 2023, will join Thunder in a playing capacity for the remainder of the season, providing much-needed experience and depth to the squad.
Christian’s decision to return to the Big Bash League (BBL) came as a result of an unforeseen opportunity. Despite not featuring in the BBL since the 12th edition, when the Sydney Sixers were eliminated in the semi-finals by the Brisbane Heat, Christian had kept himself fit through regular competition in New South Wales Premier Cricket. This has allowed him to remain in peak physical condition, ensuring he could step in at a moment’s notice.
“I made the decision during the off-season that a return to the BBL or any other T20 leagues was never entirely off the table for me,” Christian shared. “The body feels great, and I wanted to make sure I was prepared if an opportunity arose. The injuries to Cam Bancroft and Dan Sams were unfortunate, but I’m truly grateful for the chance to help the team. I wish them both a speedy recovery and hope to see them back soon.”
Christian’s return is notable not only for his skills on the field but also for the potential historical significance. Should he play for the Thunder, he will join a rare club of cricketers who have competed in the BBL at 40 and beyond, alongside the likes of Brad Hodge, Peter Siddle, Fawad Ahmed, and the legendary Shane Warne.
With 5825 runs and 280 wickets in 409 T20 appearances, Christian is regarded as one of Australia’s T20 legends. His experience and versatility make him a valuable addition to the Thunder lineup.
“We’re very fortunate to have Dan already within the club,” said Thunder general manager Trent Copeland. “He’s a legend of the BBL, and we have no doubt he’s still at the top of his game. We’re excited to see him back in action and contributing to the team’s success.”
