Dangerous heat may shadow Eid festivities in Islamabad

Hot and Dry Weather

Islamabad, June 6, 2025 – As Islamabad prepares to celebrate Eid-ul-Adha on June 7, the city is bracing for a wave of extreme heat that has raised concerns among both residents and health authorities. While the festive spirit of Eid fills the atmosphere, the unusually high temperatures are expected to cast a shadow over the celebrations.

The federal government has declared a four-day public holiday from June 6 to June 9 to mark the occasion of Eid. Traditionally, this period is one of joy and community gatherings, with people across Islamabad visiting family, distributing sacrificial meat, and offering special Eid prayers. However, this year, the dangerous heat gripping the capital has forced many to reconsider their plans and take precautions.

According to forecasts by AccuWeather, Islamabad is experiencing a significant spike in temperatures starting from Friday, June 6, with daytime highs reaching 39°C and climbing steadily through the weekend. On Eid day, June 7, the temperature is expected to hit 41°C, with a RealFeel® of 42°C. The heat is forecast to intensify further, peaking at 44°C by Tuesday, June 10, making this one of the hottest Eid periods in recent memory.

Health experts in Islamabad have advised citizens to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, stay hydrated, and take measures to protect vulnerable groups such as children and the old-age from heat-related illnesses. The UV index remains at a dangerously high level of 12, signaling extreme risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure.

Public parks, mosques, and open-air gathering areas, usually crowded during Eid, may see lower attendance due to the oppressive heat. Authorities have also urged the public to keep Eid celebrations indoors where possible and limit outdoor activities to early morning or evening.

Despite the challenges posed by the heat, the spirit of Eid remains strong in Islamabad. Many residents are adapting by holding smaller, more private gatherings and adjusting sacrificial rituals to avoid the harsh midday sun. As Islamabad navigates this Eid under intense heat, resilience and community care remain central to the celebration.
