IT & Telecom

Fans of the 28 Days Later franchise have received a positive update as director Danny Boyle revealed new details about a potential third film in the revived series. Despite mixed box office performance for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, discussions around the franchise’s future remain active and optimistic.

Boyle suggested that the next installment could begin filming as early as next year, depending on production conditions and scheduling.

Filming Delays Caused by Location Challenges

Speaking in an interview with JoBlo, Danny Boyle explained that logistical issues were the main reason for delays in production.

“We ran out of time,” Boyle said, referring to the challenges of filming in specific regions of Britain where the story is set.

He elaborated that the production team was restricted by seasonal limitations, adding, “Because it’s set in an area of Britain where you can only film at certain times of the year, we literally ran out of time.”

Despite these setbacks, Boyle remained hopeful about the project moving forward, stating that the goal is to begin filming next year if everything aligns.

Alex Garland Script Already Completed

Boyle also confirmed that acclaimed writer Alex Garland has already completed a script for the third installment. According to the director, the creative foundation for the film is strong, with enthusiasm remaining high among the production team.

Reports from Deadline further indicate that Sony is actively developing 28 Years Later III, with Garland attached as the screenwriter and Boyle expected to return as director for the concluding chapter.

Sony has prioritized the franchise’s revival, producing the first two sequels consecutively under the direction of Danny Boyle and Nia DaCosta as part of a planned trilogy.

Cillian Murphy Teases Possible Return

Adding to fan excitement, actor Cillian Murphy, who briefly appeared at the end of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, has hinted at a potential return as Jim in the final installment.

His appearance has fueled speculation that the original lead character may play a significant role in concluding the trilogy.

Franchise Future Remains Optimistic

While official confirmation is still pending, momentum around 28 Years Later 3 continues to grow. With a completed script, returning creative talent, and studio backing from Sony, the franchise appears on track for its anticipated final chapter.
