David Corenswet, who is set to take on the iconic role of Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming DC reboot, has spoken out about the growing online backlash from fans loyal to Zack Snyder’s original vision.

In an interview with GQ, Corenswet acknowledged the criticism he’s received since being cast in the summer of 2023, following Henry Cavill’s departure from the role.

Many fans of Snyder’s DC films have expressed disapproval of the reboot, calling for a boycott of Gunn’s Superman as part of a broader movement to disrupt the success of the new DC Universe. The campaign, largely fueled by social media, aims to hurt the film’s box office performance, despite no official feud between Snyder and Gunn.

James Gunn, however, appears unfazed by the controversy. In a recent conversation with Rolling Stone, Gunn said he sees the opposition as a natural part of the creative process. “I don’t mind it. I think it’s good,” he remarked. “You don’t want everybody to root for you.”

He shared an anecdote about an unnamed actor who frequently checks online reactions and becomes upset over negative comments. Gunn reminded him that the trailer received overwhelmingly positive feedback—around 97–98% approval—and that a little criticism is healthy for balance. “It’s all right to have an opposing force every once in a while,” he added.

Gunn also clarified that there is no animosity between him and Zack Snyder. He previously stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the two had spoken and that there are “no hard feelings” between them.

Despite online friction, Superman is set for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025, by Warner Bros. The film marks a new chapter for DC Studios and could be a pivotal moment for the franchise’s future, with fans eagerly waiting to see how Corenswet’s Superman will be received on the big screen.
