David Warner Announces to Retire, Targets Championship

David Warner, the world’s finest Test opener, has announced his retirement plans, bringing an end to his illustrious Test career. The 36-year-old cricketer intends to bid farewell to Test cricket during the upcoming Australian summer, following Australia’s Test against Pakistan in January 2024 at his home ground in Sydney.

Warner expressed his desire to conclude his Test career after the Pakistan series and before the two-match series against the West Indies on home turf.

Speaking to reporters before Australia’s training session in Beckenham on June 03, 2023, the left-handed batsman emphasized his commitment to completing his Test career after the Pakistan series.

However, he is expected to participate in the upcoming ICC World Test Championship against India in England and is highly likely to play in the five-match Ashes series against England. Additionally, Warner has his sights set on the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India, scheduled at the end of the year.

Warner, who boasts an impressive record of 25 centuries from 103 Test matches for Australia, maintains that his mindset will not waver despite setting an end date for his Test career. He stated, “I have always played each game as if it is my last. I enjoy being around the guys, bringing energy to the group.” Warner remains dedicated to giving his all in the forthcoming Test match against India.

While Warner plans to conclude his Test career in early 2024, he intends to continue representing Australia in white-ball cricket until the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA next year.

He expressed his desire to participate in the 2024 T20 World Cup and continue playing in tournaments like the Indian Premier League (IPL). Warner even hinted at the possibility of returning to play domestic cricket for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield.

Nevertheless, Warner’s immediate focus lies on the World Test Championship Final against India, and he believes he has been in good form during practice sessions since arriving in England. Despite his retirement plans, Warner’s exceptional skills and experience make it unwise to underestimate his ability to score runs in crucial matches.
