Islamabad, September 30, 2025 – The government is expected to announce an extension for the 2025 tax return filing deadline following strong demands from various stakeholders.
According to sources within the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), numerous requests have been received from tax bars, business associations, and individual taxpayers urging more time for return filing.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that after approval from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif or Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, the extension in the return filing deadline could be officially announced by this evening. However, FBR sources clarified that the exact timeframe for the extension has not yet been finalized.
The authorities are facing pressure as many taxpayers have reported technical issues with IRIS, the online return filing portal, making it difficult to complete their returns on time. Some representatives from tax bars also pointed out that, according to statutory requirements, the FBR must provide a three-month window for filing the annual return. This year, the original timeframe, issued on August 18, gave taxpayers only one month and 12 days to complete their return filing.
Additionally, some taxpayers have complained about slow internet speeds, which are critical for online return filing. The extension is expected to provide relief to individuals and businesses, ensuring that taxpayers can fulfill their legal obligations without undue stress. With the official announcement pending, all eyes remain on the FBR to confirm the revised dates for 2025 return filing.
