Google’s December Pixel Drop has arrived, bringing exciting AI enhancements and useful upgrades to Pixel phones, watches, and foldable devices.
Most of the new features center around Gemini, Google’s AI-powered assistant, with a mix of non-AI improvements as well.
Enhanced Gemini AI Features
For Gemini Advanced users, the assistant can now remember personal preferences, like favorite foods, to offer tailored answers. For instance, when suggesting recipes, Gemini will factor in your preferences for a more personalized response.
Gemini also improves third-party app control and smart device management. It now integrates seamlessly with your default phone and messaging apps for better communication with contacts and businesses. Spotify support has been added through a new extension, and Gemini can manage smart home devices linked to your Google Account.
Gemini Nano upgrades now allow the AI to assist with phone calls. It provides real-time suggestions based on context—for example, when a delivery person asks for directions, you can select a quick response. If needed, you can take over the call at any time.
Camera and Photo Sharing Upgrades
The Pixel camera now supports Ultra HDR photos, which can be shared directly to Instagram for vivid and vibrant images. Snapchat users also benefit from the new Photo Picker, enabling quick photo sharing whether stored locally or in the cloud.
For Pixel Fold and Pixel 9 Pro Fold owners, the cover screen can now display a live photo preview, helping subjects strike the perfect pose. Additionally, the outer display uses animated characters, such as Joy from Inside Out, to capture children’s attention during photo sessions.
Smarter Screenshot Features
Pixel Screenshot tools now auto-organize your screenshots and categorize them for easier access. Information from tickets or credit cards in a screenshot can be securely stored in Google Wallet. “Circle to Search” now includes the option to save screenshots for future reference.
UI and Accessibility Enhancements
The updated Simple View improves usability for those with visual challenges by increasing font sizes and touch sensitivity. Auto-generated captions have also been enhanced to reflect the speaker’s emotions more accurately. Meanwhile, the Recorder app gains a “Clear Voice” noise suppression feature for clearer audio recordings.
Pixel Watch Updates
Pixel Watch 2 users can now access live views from Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell devices. In Germany and Portugal, Pixel Watch 3 introduces Loss of Pulse detection, joining Fall Detection and Car Crash Detection to ensure safety in emergencies.
The December Pixel Drop blends AI-powered innovation with practical upgrades, making Pixel devices smarter, safer, and easier to use.
