Demi Lovato faces backlash over simple cooking tutorial

Demi Lovato has kicked off a new chapter in her career, but her latest endeavor hasn’t been received quite as warmly as expected.

The Camp Rock alum, who recently turned 32, faced unexpected backlash after posting a promotional cooking video on Instagram to support her upcoming cookbook, One Plate at a Time, scheduled for release on March 31, 2026.

In the Instagram clip, Demi Lovato shared what she described as one of her “favorite staple recipes” — egg and avocado toast. The video featured the pop star spreading oil on a slice of bread before placing it in a frying pan. Struggling slightly while mashing the avocado, Lovato sprinkled some salt on the toast before demonstrating how to fry a sunny-side-up egg.

“It’s so easy, even I can do it,” Demi Lovato cheerfully remarked in the video. “I’m not a professional yet, but it’s all about progress, not perfection.”

However, the simplicity of the recipe drew sharp criticism from her followers. Many social media users mocked the tutorial, claiming it was overly basic and lacked substance.

One Instagram user quipped, “Girlie is making an avocado toast with a fried egg in the announcement video… this is giving Brooklyn Beckham pretending to be a chef for two days.”

Another commented, “She’s making avocado toast in a promo? Does she think we peasants don’t know how to smash an avocado on toast? I’m tired.”

A third user criticized Lovato’s culinary credibility, writing, “She’s been cooking for only THREE YEARS and we’re supposed to believe she wrote an entire recipe book?”

Despite the backlash, Demi Lovato appears committed to embracing this new journey. The singer, now also known as the wife of musician Jordan ‘Jutes’ Lutes, seems focused on sharing her personal food experiences, especially as someone who’s been open about her recovery journey and lifestyle transformation.

While reactions to the video were mixed, many of Demi Lovato’s fans—affectionately known as Lovatics—came to her defense, praising her authenticity and reminding critics that everyone starts somewhere. Whether the cookbook will redeem itself in the eyes of skeptics remains to be seen, but Demi Lovato is clearly not afraid to try something new—one plate at a time.
