Dense Fog Alert Issued for Many Parts of Pakistan

Islamabad, January 2, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a dense fog alert for various parts of the country, cautioning citizens to be vigilant as dense fog is expected to persist in the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Upper Sindh, and Islamabad throughout the ongoing week.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, the PMD highlighted the likelihood of dense fog and advised citizens to exercise caution while traveling in affected regions. The alert comes as part of the department’s commitment to providing timely and accurate weather forecasts to ensure public safety.

The PMD’s weather report for Wednesday, January 3, 2024, predicts mainly cold and dry weather across most parts of the country. Northern regions and north Balochistan are expected to experience very cold conditions. Additionally, dense fog and smog are likely to persist in Islamabad, Punjab, upper Sindh, and the plain areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. However, isolated places in southwestern Balochistan and coastal areas of Makran may experience light rain or drizzle.

The weather forecast for Tuesday, January 2, 2024, indicated mainly cold and dry conditions in most parts of the country, with very cold temperatures in northern areas and north Balochistan. Dense fog and smog were expected to prevail in Islamabad, Punjab, upper Sindh, and the plain areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Additionally, there was a likelihood of light rain or drizzle in western Balochistan and coastal areas of Makran.

The PMD explained the synoptic situation, stating that continental air is prevailing over most parts of the country, with a shallow westerly wave present over western Balochistan. The past 24 hours recorded cold and dry weather in most regions, with very cold conditions observed in northern areas and northern Balochistan. Dense fog and smog affected the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper Sindh, and Islamabad. Rainfall was reported in Dalbandin with a recorded amount of 8mm.

Furthermore, the PMD provided information on the lowest minimum temperatures recorded in various locations during the past 24 hours. Leh recorded -11°C, Skardu -09°C, Gilgit and Gupis -06°C, Astore, Kalam, Kalat, and Srinagar -05°C.
