Islamabad, January 16, 2025 – Dense fog has blanketed large parts of Pakistan’s plains, significantly reducing visibility and causing disruptions in daily activities and transportation. Areas affected include Punjab, upper Sindh, and the plains of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly during the morning and night hours.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning about moderate to dense fog patches expected to persist in these regions over the next 24 hours. Travelers are advised to exercise caution on fog-affected roads and monitor updates for potential disruptions. The reduced visibility has already impacted highways and flight schedules, emphasizing the need for vigilance among commuters.
The Met Office has also predicted predominantly cold and dry weather for most parts of the country, with extremely cold conditions prevailing in the hilly regions. Meanwhile, light rain and snowfall are anticipated in isolated parts of Kashmir and adjoining mountainous areas. Continental air continues to dominate the weather pattern in much of the country, reinforcing the dry and cold conditions.
In the past 24 hours, dense fog remained a persistent challenge across Punjab, while northern Balochistan experienced isolated light drizzle. The foggy conditions have caused delays in transportation networks, affecting road travel and public commutes. Authorities have urged drivers to use fog lights and adhere to traffic safety measures to prevent accidents.
Extreme cold has gripped the northern regions of Pakistan, with temperatures plummeting to -12°C in Leh, -10°C in Skardu, and -9°C in Gupis. These freezing temperatures have intensified the chill, prompting residents to take precautions against the harsh weather. The demand for heating solutions and warm clothing has surged as people brace for the continued cold wave.
The PMD’s advisory includes a recommendation for residents to avoid unnecessary travel during dense fog and to remain updated on weather developments through official channels. Those in fog-affected areas are advised to limit outdoor exposure and ensure proper precautions to avoid health risks related to the cold and low visibility.
With the ongoing foggy conditions and severe cold, residents and authorities alike are urged to remain prepared for potential disruptions. The PMD continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.
