Islamabad, January 3, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning about the impending dense fog that is expected to shroud Upper Sindh on Thursday, January 4, 2024.
The PMD forecasts that the dense fog may persist over the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Upper Sindh, and Islamabad throughout the week, urging citizens to exercise caution while commuting.
In its weather report for Thursday, January 4, 2024, the PMD predicts mainly cold and dry conditions in most parts of the country, with exceptionally chilly weather anticipated in the northern regions. The report highlights the likelihood of dense fog and smog persisting in Islamabad, Punjab, Upper Sindh, and the plain areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Moreover, cloudy weather with rain (and snow over hills) is anticipated in most parts of Balochistan.
The PMD emphasized that the weather on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, was predominantly cold and dry across the country, with even colder conditions prevailing in the northern parts and north Balochistan. Dense fog and smog were reported in Islamabad, Punjab, Upper Sindh, and the plain areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Additionally, light rain and drizzle were recorded at isolated places in southern Balochistan.
Providing insight into the synoptic situation, the PMD noted that continental air is prevailing over most parts of the country. A westerly system is anticipated to enter Balochistan on the following day and may affect parts of the region until January 5th.
Over the last 24 hours, the weather has been cold and dry across most parts of the country, with particularly frigid conditions in the northern areas and northern Balochistan. Dense fog and smog have enveloped the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Upper Sindh, and Islamabad. Notably, Dalbandin recorded 7mm of rain during this period.
The recorded lowest minimum temperatures for the day were as follows: Leh at -12°C, Skardu at -10°C, Kalam, Gupis, and Gilgit at -06°C, Srinagar and Astore at -05°C, and Hunza at -04°C.
The PMD’s advisory underscores the importance of staying informed and taking necessary precautions as the dense fog poses potential risks to transportation and visibility. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and to exercise caution while traveling, especially during early morning and late evening hours when fog concentration tends to be at its peak.
