Islamabad, January 20, 2024 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather advisory warning of the persistence of dense fog in Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, upper Sindh, and Islamabad on Sunday, January 21, 2024.
Citizens are urged to exercise caution as visibility is expected to be significantly reduced. Day temperatures are anticipated to remain below normal in most parts of Punjab due to the prevailing dense fog.
According to the PMD, the synoptic situation indicates the prevalence of continental air over most regions of the country, contributing to the ongoing dense fog cover.
Looking ahead to Sunday, January 21, 2024, the PMD predicts mainly cold and dry weather in most plain areas of the country, with exceptionally cold conditions in northern parts and northern Balochistan. The dense fog and smog are likely to persist in Islamabad, the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh. Frost is expected to form at a few locations in Kashmir during the early morning hours.
Saturday, January 20, 2024, saw predominantly cold and dry weather in most plain areas of the country, with extremely cold conditions prevailing in the northern regions. Dense fog and smog persisted in Islamabad, the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh.
Over the last 24 hours, cold and dry weather dominated most parts of the country, with particularly frigid conditions in the north. Rainfall was recorded in Turbat (7 mm), Gwadar (2 mm), and Panjgur (1 mm). The dense fog and smog continued to affect Islamabad, the plain areas of Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh.
The recorded lowest minimum temperatures during this period were as follows: Leh (-11°C), Skardu (-9°C), Kalam (-6°C), Gilgit, Gupis, Astore (-5°C), and Srinagar (-4°C).
The PMD’s advisory comes as a reminder for residents and travelers in the affected regions to take necessary precautions while commuting, especially on roads and highways where visibility may be severely compromised. Drivers are advised to use fog lights and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
