Denzel Washington had no idea what was in store for him at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival—but the audience did. The legendary actor, now 70, was visibly moved when he was surprised with an honorary Palme d’Or, presented by none other than his longtime friend and collaborator, director Spike Lee.
The two icons were in Cannes to debut their latest cinematic venture, Highest 2 Lowest, but the evening took an emotional turn as Lee took the stage to pay tribute to Denzel Washington’s remarkable contributions to cinema. The crowd rose in a thunderous standing ovation, and Washington, clearly overwhelmed, smiled warmly and urged them, “Sit down, please,” trying to settle the roaring applause.
“This is a total surprise for me,” Washington said with glistening eyes. “I’m a little emotional. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all. It was a great opportunity to collaborate once again with my brother—brother from another mother—Spike.” His heartfelt words drew laughter and cheers from the audience.
Denzel Washington continued, “To be here once again in Cannes… we’re a very privileged group in this room. We get to make movies, wear tuxedos, dress up, and get paid for it. We are blessed beyond measure—and I’m blessed beyond measure. Thank you.”
Each year, the Cannes Film Festival honors icons who have shaped the industry, and this year’s recognition of Denzel Washington was one of its most heartfelt moments. Just a few days earlier, Leonardo DiCaprio honored Robert De Niro with a similar award, calling him a life-changing influence. Now, Washington joined that elite circle.
Washington and Spike Lee’s latest collaboration, Highest 2 Lowest, marks their fifth film together and their first since 2006’s Inside Man. The new film is a bold reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, shifting the narrative to modern-day New York City. Washington stars as a music industry mogul renowned for having the “best ears in the business,” who becomes embroiled in a harrowing ransom plot that challenges his values and decisions.
Stylish, intense, and laced with moral complexity, it’s another classic from the dynamic duo. Highest 2 Lowest hits select theaters on August 22 and begins streaming on Apple TV+ on September 5.
Denzel Washington, once again, proves he’s not just a star—but a legend.
