Depression Forms Near Karachi, PMD Issues Update

cyclonic storm Sindh

Islamabad, October 1, 2025 – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an important update regarding a developing depression forming close to Karachi.

The system emerged after a well-marked low-pressure area developed over the Saurashtra coast and adjoining Gulf of Kuch in Gujarat, India.

According to PMD, the weather system has now shifted westward and is lying over the northeast Arabian Sea, about 310 kilometers southeast of Karachi. Meteorologists predict that it may intensify further into a depression within the next 12 hours and could continue moving west or southwest in the coming days.

Under its influence, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected in several districts of Sindh, including Tharparkar, Umerkot, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Thatta, Sujawal, and the Karachi Division. The PMD has also warned of rough to very rough sea conditions with squally winds blowing at 45–55 km/h.

Fishermen have been strongly advised to avoid venturing into the deep sea until October 3, as the developing depression could worsen marine conditions. The PMD’s cyclone warning center in Karachi is closely monitoring the system and will continue issuing timely advisories.

Authorities have been urged to remain alert, ensure precautionary measures are in place, and keep the public informed. The developing depression highlights the need for coastal communities to stay cautious as the weather system evolves.
