Disney Hits Box Office Milestones: “Mufasa” and “Moana 2” Shine

Two Disney blockbusters, “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “Moana 2,” are achieving remarkable box office milestones, reinforcing the studio’s dominance in global cinema.

“Mufasa: The Lion King” has soared past $500 million globally within just four weeks of release. Over the weekend, it led the global box office, earning $41 million, including $27.9 million from 52 international markets.

After a slower start during the Christmas season, the photorealistic musical has picked up momentum, bringing its total earnings to $540 million. The film has generated $189 million in the United States and Canada, while top-performing international markets include France ($33.7 million), the United Kingdom ($29.9 million), Mexico ($24.6 million), and Germany ($24 million). With a production cost exceeding $200 million, “Mufasa” still has ground to cover to secure profitability.

Meanwhile, “Moana 2” is set to cross the $1 billion milestone, with its current ticket sales at $989.9 million. The animated sequel earned $11.1 million internationally and $17.6 million globally over the weekend.

Originally developed for streaming, the film transitioned to a theatrical release and is on track to become Disney’s third billion-dollar film of 2024, joining “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The film’s success almost guarantees a third installment for the adventurous wayfinder.

In other international box office news, “Nosferatu,” a reimagining of the classic “Dracula” tale starring Bill Skarsgård, Lily-Rose Depp, and Nicholas Hoult, grossed $13.7 million internationally and $20.5 million globally over the weekend. The film’s total earnings stand at $135 million globally, including $53 million from overseas markets.

Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” added $20.3 million from 62 international markets and $31.3 million worldwide over the weekend.

Despite a disappointing debut in China with $1.8 million, the animated sequel has performed well elsewhere, accumulating $384 million globally after four weeks.

Disney’s latest achievements with “Mufasa” and “Moana 2” underscore the enduring appeal of their beloved franchises and the power of captivating storytelling to drive box office success.
