As Pakistan prepares for the rollout of 5G services, one of the most common questions among mobile users is whether they will need to purchase a new SIM card to access the next-generation network.
In most cases, customers may not need a new SIM. Many existing SIM cards already support 5G technology, meaning users can access the faster network as long as their SIM, smartphone, and mobile operator all support the new service.
The clarification comes as Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) announced plans to roll out 5G internet services across the country. The company recently shared details of its spectrum acquisition following the latest auction for next-generation mobile services.
According to a statement submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), PTCL’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Pak Telecom Mobile Limited (PTML), secured a total of 180 MHz spectrum during the recent Next Generation Mobile Services (NGMS)/5G Spectrum Auction in Pakistan.
The spectrum allocation includes 60 MHz in the 2600 MHz band and 120 MHz in the 3500 MHz band. These frequency bands are widely used globally for high-speed 5G connectivity.
The Assignment Stage held on March 12, 2026 confirmed PTML’s exact frequency positions within both bands. The total cost of acquiring this spectrum reached approximately $156.75 million, strengthening PTCL’s capacity to launch high-speed mobile internet services across Pakistan.
Before launching the service, PTML will complete regulatory requirements and sign the NGMS/5G license with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). Once operational, the new network will enhance mobile broadband experiences for users across PTML’s telecom brands.
These include Ufone, Telenor Pakistan, and Onic Pakistan, which are expected to benefit from the expanded spectrum and improved network capabilities.
PTCL said the rollout of 5G will take place in phases, initially focusing on major cities before gradually expanding to other regions. The technology is expected to deliver significantly faster data speeds, improved connectivity, and lower latency compared with existing 4G networks.
The introduction of 5G is also expected to accelerate Pakistan’s digital transformation by enabling new technologies such as IoT applications, smart cities, and advanced industrial solutions.
For users, the key requirement will be a 5G-compatible smartphone and network availability in their area. In many cases, the existing SIM card may already be ready for the transition to the next generation of mobile connectivity.
