Donatella Versace is stepping down as chief creative officer of the legendary fashion house, marking the end of an era that has defined high fashion for decades.
The 69-year-old designer made the announcement on Thursday, revealing that Dario Vitale, former design and image director at Miu Miu, will be taking over the role starting April 1.
“Championing the next generation of designers has always been important to me. I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will be joining us, and excited to see Versace through new eyes,” Donatella Versace shared in an emotional Instagram post.
Having taken the reins of the brand after the tragic murder of her brother, Gianni Versace, in 1997, Donatella Versace reflected on her tenure. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy. He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity,” she wrote, acknowledging her deep personal connection to the house of Versace.
Although stepping away from design, Donatella Versace will not be leaving the brand entirely. Instead, she will transition into a new role as Chief Brand Ambassador, ensuring that her influence continues to shape the future of the fashion house. “Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart,” she assured her devoted followers, reaffirming her commitment to the company she helped build.
Dario Vitale, an esteemed industry veteran who has worked under Miuccia Prada at Miu Miu since 2010, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the iconic brand. “It is a privilege to contribute to the future growth of Versace and its global impact through my vision, expertise, and dedication,” he stated.
His appointment has also sparked speculation that the Prada Group may be considering a potential acquisition of Versace from its current parent company, Capri Holdings. If such a move were to materialize, it could mark a significant shift in the luxury fashion landscape.
As Donatella Versace embarks on this new chapter, her legacy remains firmly woven into the fabric of Versace, ensuring that her influence will endure for years to come.
