Earthquake Jolts Karachi with 4.7 Magnitude Tremor

Pakistan Independence Day 76

Karachi, March 31, 2025 – A moderate earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck Karachi and its surrounding regions on Monday afternoon, triggering panic among residents.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake occurred at 16:11 PST, shaking buildings and prompting people to evacuate in some areas.

The PMD reported that the earthquake originated at a depth of 19 kilometers, with its epicenter located 75 kilometers north of Karachi at coordinates 25.54°N latitude and 67.17°E longitude. While the tremor was moderate in intensity, it was strong enough to be felt across various neighborhoods of Karachi, causing temporary disruption in daily activities.

Residents in multiple parts of Karachi, including Saddar, Clifton, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and DHA, reported experiencing the earthquake. Many people rushed out of their homes and offices as the tremors rattled doors and windows. Eyewitnesses recounted their fear as the earthquake shook the city, with some describing a distinct rumbling sound preceding the tremors.

Despite the sudden jolt, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage. Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious and follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks. The PMD has assured that further assessments are underway to evaluate the full impact of the earthquake in Karachi and its adjoining areas.

Seismic activity is not uncommon in Pakistan, as the region lies near the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Karachi, although not typically prone to frequent earthquakes, has experienced occasional tremors in the past. Experts advise preparedness and awareness to mitigate risks associated with seismic events.

As Karachi continues to recover from the sudden tremor, officials are closely monitoring the situation for any developments. The PMD has advised residents to stay informed through official channels and avoid spreading misinformation. The earthquake serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of seismic activities, emphasizing the need for emergency preparedness in urban areas like Karachi.
