Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb leads ECC review of surplus sugar stocks held by TCP.
The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet has taken up a proposal to export 108,000 metric tonnes (MT) of sugar currently held by the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP).
The meeting was chaired by Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb at the Finance Division. The ECC reviewed a summary presented by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research regarding the disposal of the remaining sugar stocks.
The ministry sought approval to invite international tenders for the export of 108,000 MT of sugar. The stock represents the remaining quantity from the 300,000 MT of sugar imported last year following recommendations by the Steering Committee on Sugar, which had been formed with the approval of the federal cabinet.
The proposed export is aimed at managing the surplus sugar stock maintained by TCP. The international tendering process will be conducted in accordance with the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) Rules 2004.
Under the proposal, the relevant authorities will proceed with international bidding while ensuring compliance with the applicable procurement regulations. The move comes as the government continues to manage sugar supplies and stocks through coordinated measures involving different ministries and public sector institutions.
The ECC meeting was attended by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain and Federal Minister for Investment Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh.
Advisor to the Prime Minister for Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan also participated in the meeting. Federal secretaries and senior officials from the relevant ministries and divisions were present as well.
The consideration of the ECC sugar tender proposal marks another step in the government’s efforts to manage imported sugar stocks and determine an appropriate channel for the disposal of surplus quantities.
The international tender for 108,000 MT will now proceed under the prescribed PPRA framework, subject to the government’s decision on the submitted proposal and completion of the required procedural steps.
