Islamabad, March 30, 2025 – As Eid-ul-Fitr approaches, medical experts are urging the faithful to prioritize their health and maintain a balanced diet while celebrating the joyous occasion.
Just as Ramadan teaches self-discipline through fasting, worship, sehri, and iftar, Eid-ul-Fitr also brings its own unique delights. However, overindulgence in rich foods can lead to serious health complications, especially for those with pre-existing medical conditions.
Doctors have cautioned that individuals suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and joint pain should be particularly mindful of their diet during Eid-ul-Fitr. After a month of fasting, the body’s organs have undergone a healing process, but excessive eating immediately after Ramadan can disrupt this balance and lead to health issues such as digestive problems, hypertension, and fluctuating blood sugar levels. Therefore, moderation is key to staying healthy while enjoying the festivities.
According to health professionals, including Prof. of Medicine Mayo Hospital Dr. Israr ul Haq Toor, Assistant Professor of Medicine Unit 3 Lahore General Hospital Dr. Muhammad Maqsood, and Consultant Gynecologist Dr. Laila Shafiq, people should avoid excessive consumption of unhealthy foods such as fast food, soft drinks, artificial juices, and fried items. They emphasized that during Eid-ul-Fitr, many individuals neglect their health, which can result in serious medical complications.
Experts advise that diabetics, heart patients, and individuals struggling with obesity should be particularly cautious about consuming sweets, as sugar and ghee can be harmful to their health. Instead of indulging in traditional high-calorie treats, they recommend healthier alternatives such as almonds cooked in milk without artificial sweeteners. While milk is rich in calcium and phosphorus, kidney patients should limit their intake to no more than half a cup per serving. Additionally, the consumption of raisins and dates should be avoided to prevent further complications. For a healthier option, kidney patients can lightly fry almonds using a minimal amount of olive or canola oil.
Medical professionals stress that the best way to stay healthy during Eid-ul-Fitr is to practice mindful eating, stay hydrated, and engage in light physical activity, such as regular walks. Overeating can lead to various nervous system disorders, high blood pressure, and stomach-related issues, which can be avoided with proper dietary management.
As families gather to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr in Islamabad and across Pakistan, it is important to remember that health should not be compromised for short-term indulgences. By making smart dietary choices and maintaining a balance, people can enjoy the festive season without suffering from unnecessary health concerns.
