Sir Elton John, the legendary music icon, shared a poignant moment during the London premiere of his latest project, the musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada. The 77-year-old artist revealed that he has not been able to fully experience the production due to his deteriorating eyesight.
Speaking at the gala event on December 1, John addressed the audience about his challenges. “I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight,” he said, referring to his worsening vision, which has left him unable to watch the stage debut.
Despite this limitation, Elton John expressed delight in the musical’s sound. “It’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it, and, boy, it sounded good tonight,” he said, emphasizing his connection to the work through its vibrant score and performances.
The musical, inspired by the beloved 2006 film, features John’s compositions paired with lyrics by Shaina Taub and Mark Sonnenblick and a script by Kate Wetherhead. The production stars Vanessa Williams in the iconic role of Miranda Priestly, famously portrayed by Meryl Streep in the film.
Held at London’s Dominion Theatre, the gala also served as a fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The star-studded event brought together notable figures, including Donatella Versace and Anna Wintour, who is rumored to have inspired Priestly’s character.
During his speech, John disclosed that his vision loss stems from an infection earlier this year, which has resulted in total blindness in his right eye. This setback has significantly impacted his ability to engage with creative projects, making his involvement in The Devil Wears Prada musical all the more remarkable.
While he may not be able to visually experience the production, Elton John’s dedication to the musical underscores his enduring passion for storytelling and music. His involvement continues to inspire fans and creatives alike, proving that his contributions to the arts remain profound, even in the face of personal challenges.
