Music icon Elton John has shared candid reflections on how sobriety has influenced his social life, especially when hosting friends and family at home.

Speaking to The London Standard, the 78-year-old singer revealed that while he and his husband David Furnish remain committed to not drinking alcohol, they sometimes miss the celebratory aspect of special occasions.

“David and I spend a lot of our time entertaining people, and it’s boring just drinking water,” Elton explained. “Especially if someone’s here at the house and it’s a special occasion. You want to raise a toast to someone, and toasting with water just doesn’t do it.”

Elton emphasized that their choice is personal, not a criticism of alcohol itself. “We’re not anti-alcohol. We just choose not to drink it. We were just a bit selfish in that we wanted something to fill a need in our life,” he said.

He also reflected on the challenges of entertaining while staying sober. “It’s been a long time since we could entertain and partake, but we will serve wine to people who drink. So it’s nice to be able to ‘join in,’” Elton noted.

The music legend concluded by sharing that enjoying a glass of Blanc de Blancs sometimes helps elevate the occasion, adding joy and brightness to celebrations.

Elton John’s reflections offer a personal perspective on balancing sobriety with social traditions, showing that it’s possible to enjoy entertaining while honoring personal choices.
