Emma Watson shares the challenges of fame and dating

Emma Watson has reflected on the strange and sometimes isolating realities of fame, in a resurfaced interview from her September 2025 appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast.

The Harry Potter star described how her public persona often precedes her in social situations.

“It does feel like my avatar enters the room unexpectedly, all of a sudden. And then I’m navigating a completely different conversation if someone hasn’t figured out that it’s me yet,” Watson explained.

She admitted that interactions with people who recognize her celebrity image rather than her authentic self can feel “dehumanising.”

“That can feel really dehumanising and sometimes quite… seeing someone’s behaviour completely switch and turn and change can be kind of a jarring experience,” she added.

Fame, Dating, and Authentic Connections

Watson also joked about the challenges of dating in the public eye, calling it “basically a complete disaster and free-for-all,” while noting she finds solace in connecting with people unfamiliar with her work.

“It’s funny, occasionally people will apologise to me for the fact they’ve not seen my films. And I will be like, ‘Please don’t apologise. That is bliss to me,’” Watson said.

She explained that meeting people without prior expectations allows for more genuine connections.

“Like, music to my ears that you’re not going to constantly be navigating it. And me also navigating with you this projection of me, or this Emma Watson avatar-person will not be this ghost in the room,” she concluded.

Watson’s candid reflections shed light on the complexities of celebrity life, balancing fame with authentic human interactions.
