Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the final ODI against Sri Lanka after suffering an injury during England’s second-match defeat at Headingley.
England have suffered a setback ahead of the decisive ODI against Sri Lanka, with experienced wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler ruled out of the third and final match at The Oval on Sunday.
Buttler picked up the injury while running between the wickets during England’s 16-run defeat in the second ODI at Headingley, Leeds. The setback came during a determined innings in which he scored 69 runs, marking his highest ODI total in three years.
The England batter required attention from team physiotherapist Steve Haw during his innings before initially leaving the field. Despite struggling with the injury, Buttler returned to the crease and continued his innings. He was eventually dismissed after attempting a shot against Sri Lankan left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka, with Kamindu Mendis completing the catch at deep midwicket.
The full nature and severity of Buttler’s injury remain unclear. He is expected to undergo an MRI scan, with further details regarding his condition likely to become available early next week.
Dan Lawrence Added to England Squad
The England and Wales Cricket Board has responded to Buttler’s absence by bringing uncapped middle-order batter Dan Lawrence into the squad for the series finale.
The call-up gives Lawrence an opportunity to make his ODI debut if selected for the decider. His inclusion strengthens England’s batting options as the hosts prepare for a crucial final match against Sri Lanka.
Jordan Cox Set to Keep Wickets
While Lawrence has been added as Buttler’s replacement in the squad, Jordan Cox is expected to take over wicketkeeping responsibilities in the final ODI.
Cox is reportedly ahead of Tom Banton for the wicketkeeper’s role, potentially giving the emerging batter an important opportunity in the series-deciding contest.
Updated England Squad
England’s squad features Harry Brook as captain, alongside Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Tom Banton, Sonny Baker, Dan Lawrence, Jordan Cox, Henry Crocombe, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Joe Root and Josh Tongue.
With the three-match series finely poised, England will look to regroup quickly and secure the series against Sri Lanka at The Oval.
