The world No. 1 will miss the Beijing tournament while continuing his recovery and will be unable to defend his China Open title.
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the China Open as he continues to recover from a knee injury that has kept him away from competitive tennis. The Italian confirmed his decision on Friday, saying he is not yet ready to return to tournament action.
The injury also prevented Sinner from participating in the US Open. He had already missed the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open, two major hard-court events leading into the final Grand Slam of the season.
Italian Star Delays Competitive Return
Sinner has not competed since claiming his fifth Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in July. The 25-year-old had been expected to make his return during the North American hard-court swing, but his recovery has taken longer than anticipated.
In a statement shared on social media, Sinner expressed his disappointment at missing the Beijing tournament. He explained that his knee has not recovered sufficiently for him to compete and said he would continue working toward a return as soon as possible.
The Italian also highlighted his connection with the China Open, particularly the support from the tournament’s fans and the atmosphere in Beijing.
Sinner Unable to Defend China Open Crown
Sinner’s withdrawal means he will not be able to defend his China Open championship this year. He captured the Beijing title last season after defeating American player Learner Tien in straight sets in the final.
The Italian has enjoyed considerable success at the tournament, having also won the China Open in 2023. His absence will therefore leave the men’s competition without its defending champion.
China Open Set for September 30
The men’s China Open is scheduled to take place from September 30 to October 6. Sinner is now expected to focus on completing his rehabilitation before returning to competitive action.
The world No. 1 said he remains eager to get back on court and indicated that he hopes to return to Beijing next year. His latest withdrawal leaves his comeback timeline uncertain as he continues his recovery from the knee problem.
