Southampton, September 8, 2025 – England produced a historic performance in the final One Day International (ODI) at Southampton, thrashing South Africa by a staggering 342 runs.
The margin set a new world record for the heaviest defeat in men’s ODI history, surpassing India’s 317-run victory over Sri Lanka in 2023.
Although South Africa had already sealed the three-match series 2-0, England were determined to salvage pride and avoid a whitewash. After being sent in to bat, the hosts quickly punished the decision, racing past 100 runs in just under 14 overs.
Jamie Smith provided early momentum with a fluent 62 off 48 balls, while Ben Duckett chipped in with a steady 31. The real fireworks came from Joe Root and youngster Jacob Bethell. The pair added 182 runs for the third wicket, shifting the contest decisively in England’s favor. Root crafted his 19th ODI century with typical elegance, while Bethell, only 21, smashed a thrilling 110 from 82 deliveries — his maiden international hundred. Bethell also became the second-youngest player from England to score a century in men’s ODIs.
Jos Buttler piled further misery on the visitors, blasting 62 off just 32 balls. With contributions across the lineup, England stormed to an imposing total of 414 runs.
Chasing such a daunting target, South Africa’s task became even tougher when captain Temba Bavuma, injured during fielding, was unable to bat. Their innings unraveled almost immediately, with Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse tearing through the top order. South Africa collapsed to 24 for 6 inside the first Powerplay, as the relentless pace duo shared six wickets.
The only resistance came from Corbin Bosch and Keshav Maharaj, who added 20 runs in what turned out to be the visitors’ highest partnership. Adil Rashid’s spin wrapped up the tail, sealing a memorable triumph for the hosts.
While England celebrated their record-breaking margin, South Africa took solace in clinching their first ODI series victory in England since 1998. The result also follows their series win in Australia last month, underlining their growing form.
Both teams will now switch focus to the three-match T20I series, beginning on September 10, where South Africa will aim to extend their dominance and England will look for revenge.
