Manchester, July 27, 2025 — The gripping Manchester Test between England and India concluded in a draw, as the visitors held firm on the final day to keep the series alive.
Facing a daunting 311-run deficit after the first innings, India responded with determination, anchored by an outstanding fifth-wicket partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar.
Day five of the Manchester Test began with India trailing by 137 runs and eight wickets in hand. KL Rahul and Shubman Gill resumed the innings under pressure from England’s bowlers. Rahul was looking solid but was dismissed for 90 by Ben Stokes in the 71st over. Gill, however, continued his sublime form, notching up his fourth century of the series.
Gill’s milestone made him India’s top run-scorer in a Test series against England with 722 runs, surpassing Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 712. He also became the leading Asian run-getter in a Test series in England and joined an elite list of Indian batsmen—only behind Rahul Dravid—for most centuries in England.
Despite losing Gill after a well-made hundred, India found heroes in Jadeja and Sundar. Their marathon stand of 203 runs steered India into the lead. At tea, India was 11 runs ahead, and the pair’s resilience ensured that England’s bowlers couldn’t break through in the final session.
Both Jadeja and Sundar reached their centuries late in the day—Jadeja in the 141st over and Sundar in the 143rd. India declared at 425/4, prompting both captains to agree on a draw with less than an hour of play left.
This Manchester Test showcased India’s grit under pressure and kept the five-match Test series alive at 2-1 in England’s favor. The final and deciding Test begins at The Oval on July 31. Ben Stokes was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance, including a five-wicket haul and a century in England’s first innings.
