Islamabad, December 17, 2023 – Brace yourselves, residents of northern Pakistan, as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issues a chilling forecast for extreme cold weather in the region on Monday, December 18, 2023.
In its daily weather report, the PMD has indicated that predominantly cold and dry conditions will prevail in most plain areas of the country, with exceptionally low temperatures anticipated in the northern regions. The department has advised residents to take necessary precautions to safeguard against the harsh weather conditions.
As part of the weather update for Sunday, December 17, 2023, the PMD reiterated that very cold weather is expected in the northern areas, emphasizing that the temperatures in these regions are likely to plummet significantly. Fog and smog are expected to pose challenges in upper Sindh, plain areas of Punjab, and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa during morning and night hours.
Explaining the synoptic situation, the PMD highlighted that continental air is prevailing over most parts of the country, contributing to the anticipated drop in temperatures. The department urged citizens to stay informed about the evolving weather conditions and advised them to plan their activities accordingly.
Looking back at the weather over the past 24 hours, the PMD reported that cold and dry conditions persisted in most parts of the country, with cloudy weather observed in upper regions. Notably, rain occurred in upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, and northeast Punjab, accompanied by light snowfall in Gilgit Baltistan and Murree.
Rainfall measurements for the past 24 hours were reported as follows: Pattan 02mm, Mirkhani, Chitral 01mm in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Sialkot City and Narowal each receiving 01mm in Punjab.
Recording the lowest minimum temperatures for the day, the PMD noted that Leh experienced a bone-chilling -06°C, Skardu reached -04°C, and Kalam and Gupis both registered -03°C.
The local authorities have been advised to be on high alert, particularly in the northern regions, where the extreme cold weather is expected to have a significant impact on daily life. Residents are urged to take precautionary measures, such as using adequate winter clothing, ensuring heating systems are in good working order, and being cautious while commuting in adverse weather conditions.
As the nation braces for the impending cold wave, the PMD will continue to monitor and update the public on any changes in the weather pattern, providing essential information to help citizens navigate the challenging conditions expected on December 18, 2023.
