Facebook, WhatsApp Join PTA Workshop on Terrorism Threats

Pakistan Telecom Authority

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in collaboration with Meta, organized a high-level workshop titled “Counter Terrorism in the Digital Age” at PTA Headquarters.

The event brought together representatives from Meta’s platforms — Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp — as well as key officials from government bodies and law enforcement agencies (LEAs). The primary focus was to discuss Meta’s evolving content policies targeting terrorism and to improve cooperation between digital platforms, law enforcement, and regulators in Pakistan.

During the workshop, participants were briefed on content moderation strategies, complaint handling mechanisms, and escalation processes for terrorism-related content. A dedicated Q&A session allowed attendees to directly engage with Meta’s policy experts to better understand the company’s enforcement procedures and community standards.

Chairman PTA, Major General (R) Hafeez ur Rehman, emphasized the authority’s commitment to ensuring a safer online environment. “Partnerships with global tech platforms like Meta are essential to preventing the exploitation of digital spaces by extremist groups,” he stated.

Dr. Nawab Osman, Meta’s Lead for Dangerous Organizations and Individuals (DOI) Policy, praised PTA’s initiative. “Collaborative efforts such as this workshop are critical for developing safer online communities while respecting freedom of expression and community guidelines,” he said.

This initiative aligns with PTA’s broader agenda of strengthening Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and promoting responsible internet usage. The Authority aims to boost national digital resilience through such partnerships, ensuring that technology serves as a force for good and not a platform for extremism.

The workshop marks another milestone in PTA’s efforts to build strategic alliances with international digital stakeholders to combat online threats and enhance regulatory effectiveness.

With terrorism increasingly taking digital form, forums like this signal the importance of proactive governance and shared responsibility in securing cyberspace.
