Islamabad, September 22, 2025 – The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has achieved a major milestone by crossing the figure of 8 million active taxpayers.
According to the latest Active Taxpayers List (ATL) released on Monday, a total of 8,002,295 individuals and entities have been recorded as active filers up to September 21, 2025, for the tax year 2024.
The updated ATL includes those who submitted their income tax returns for 2024 by September 22, 2025, and also paid the required default surcharge for inclusion. Officials highlighted that this steady rise reflects growing awareness among taxpayers and improvements in digital facilitation measures introduced by the FBR.
Last year, the board shifted from an annual update system to a daily mechanism for issuing the ATL. Under this arrangement, the ATL for 2025 will be officially published on October 1, 2025, after the September 30 filing deadline. Until then, the ATL for 2024 will continue to be recognized for legal, financial, and administrative purposes.
Inclusion in the list provides multiple benefits for compliant taxpayers, such as reduced withholding tax rates and other legal advantages. On the other hand, individuals with taxable income who remain outside the ATL face higher deductions and stricter penalties.
Analysts believe that this milestone is a positive step toward expanding the tax net, ensuring fairness, and rewarding responsible taxpayers who contribute to the country’s revenue system.
