FBR gathers dual nationality information of customs officials

Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has embarked on the task of gathering information regarding the dual nationality status of customs officials in various grades from BS-1 to BS-21.

The decision comes in response to a request from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) seeking clarification on the dual nationality status of customs personnel.

In a memo circulated on Thursday to all chief collectors of Customs, director generals of customs, and collectors of appeals/adjudication, the FBR outlined the details of the information required and set a deadline for its submission.

The memo directed the chief collectorates and directorates to compile information related to dual nationality, if any, among employees in the grades of BS-01 to BS-21 under their administrative control. The FBR emphasized that the provided information should be comprehensive and include the following details:

1. Name of the employee

2. Designation

3. Service group

4. CNIC number

5. Current place of posting

6. Country/dual nationality

The FBR set a deadline of November 21, 2022, for the submission of this information, urging the concerned authorities to ensure timely completion. To meet this deadline, special duties have been assigned to officers and officials, and they have been instructed to work during the upcoming weekend holidays.

The initiation of this scrutiny is in response to the PAC’s request for information on dual nationality among customs officials. The FBR’s efforts aim to fulfill this request promptly and provide the necessary details to the Establishment Division as required by the PAC.

The FBR’s directive makes it clear that in case the information is not received by the specified due date and time, it will be assumed that the collectorates’ and directorates’ replies are nil. Any subsequent discrepancy in this regard will be the responsibility of the respective collectorates and directorates.

The scrutiny of dual nationality among customs officials is a significant step in ensuring transparency and accountability within the government sector. It aligns with the broader efforts to uphold the principles of public service and prevent any potential conflicts of interest arising from dual nationality status.

By collecting and providing this information, the FBR aims to contribute to the government’s commitment to accountability and transparency in its various departments. This initiative reflects the FBR’s dedication to fulfilling its responsibilities and addressing the queries raised by parliamentary committees to ensure good governance and adherence to legal and ethical standards.
