18-year-old left-back joins from LDU Quito on loan with an option to make the move permanent based on first-team appearances.
FC Barcelona have officially secured the services of promising Ecuadorian defender Josue Caicedo from LDU Quito, strengthening their long-term plans with the addition of one of South America’s emerging young talents.
The 18-year-old left-back joins the Catalan club on an initial loan agreement. Under the terms of the deal, the transfer will automatically become permanent if Caicedo reaches a specified number of appearances for Barcelona’s first team. Reports indicate the permanent transfer fee could reach approximately €2.5 million ($2.9 million).
As part of the agreement, Ecuadorian side LDU Quito will also retain a 20 percent share of any future transfer involving the player. The clause could provide significant financial benefits for the club should Caicedo develop into a regular first-team player and attract interest from other European clubs in the future.
Caicedo is regarded as a versatile and physically strong defender. Before transitioning into a full-back role, he started his football journey as a winger, a background that has helped him develop attacking instincts and strong ball-carrying abilities. His pace, technical skills, and ability to contribute in both defensive and offensive phases have drawn attention from scouts across Europe.
Despite his young age, the Ecuadorian has already gained valuable first-team experience with LDU Quito, one of Ecuador’s most successful football clubs. His performances at the senior level have earned praise and positioned him as one of the country’s most promising defensive prospects.
Barcelona plan to integrate Caicedo gradually into their football structure. The youngster is expected to begin the upcoming campaign with Barcelona Atlètic, the club’s B team, where he will continue his development while adapting to Spanish football. At the same time, he is also expected to participate in training sessions with the senior squad.
Spanish media first reported the transfer toward the end of June. However, Barcelona officially confirmed the signing late on July 13, ending weeks of speculation surrounding the defender’s future and marking another investment in youth by the Spanish giants.
