Ferland Mendy will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a serious thigh tendon injury during Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory away to Espanyol on Sunday.
The left-back was forced off the pitch after just 15 minutes and was replaced by Fran García.
Official Medical Update
In a statement released on Monday, Real Madrid confirmed the diagnosis following medical tests conducted by the club’s medical services.
“Following tests carried out today on our player Ferland Mendy by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a tendon injury in the rectus femoris of his right leg,” the club stated on its official website.
Ongoing Injury Struggles
This marks Mendy’s fifth injury of the season, limiting him to just nine first-team appearances so far. Since joining from Olympique Lyon in 2019, the defender has struggled with recurring fitness issues, making only 210 appearances in seven years and never exceeding 26 league matches in a single season.
Club officials have not provided a specific recovery timeline, but tendon-related injuries often require extended rehabilitation and, in some cases, surgery.
A similar case was seen with teammate Éder Militão, who underwent surgery on a hamstring tendon injury and is expected to miss the World Cup.
Injury Crisis at Real Madrid
Mendy’s setback adds to a growing injury list at Real Madrid ahead of a crucial period in the season. Several key players are currently sidelined, including Arda Güler, Kylian Mbappé, Thibaut Courtois, and Dani Carvajal.
The club is preparing for a potentially decisive La Liga clash against FC Barcelona next Sunday, a match that could play a key role in the title race.
