Islamabad, December 4, 2025 – In a historic move, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir NI(M), HJ, currently serving as Chief of Army Staff, has been appointed as Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces for a five-year tenure.
The decision was approved by President Asif Ali Zardari following a summary submitted by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif.
This unprecedented appointment grants Field Marshal Munir the dual responsibility of Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, marking a significant milestone in the country’s military leadership structure. The President extended his best wishes to Field Marshal Munir for his new role, emphasizing hopes for a successful tenure in safeguarding national security.
Additionally, the President approved a two-year extension in the service of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu NI(M), HJ, the Chief of Air Staff. This extension will commence after the completion of his current term on March 19, 2026, ensuring continuity in the leadership of Pakistan’s air defense.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s submission highlighted the strategic importance of these appointments, aiming to strengthen coordination among the armed forces. Field Marshal Munir’s elevation to Chief of Defence Forces reflects his distinguished service record and commitment to national defense.
