FIFA has announced new rules aimed at tackling racism and misconduct ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The decision was approved during a meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) held on April 28, 2026.

Red Card for Covering Mouth in Confrontations

Under the new regulation, players who cover their mouths during confrontations with opponents may face a red card at the discretion of competition organizers.

FIFA stated that such behavior could be penalized to discourage hidden verbal abuse and improve transparency during on-field disputes.

Rule Inspired by Racism Controversy

The move follows a controversy during a UEFA Champions League match earlier this year involving Gianluca Prestianni and Vinicius Junior. Prestianni was accused of racially abusing the Real Madrid star while covering his mouth.

Although the player denied the allegations, he was handed a three-match suspension for racist conduct and an additional three-match ban for homophobic remarks.

Strict Action on Protests

A second key rule change allows referees to issue a red card to players who leave the field in protest of a decision.

FIFA clarified that referees may take such action at their discretion to maintain discipline and prevent disruptions during matches.

AFCON Incident Influenced Decision

The rule comes in response to incidents such as the Africa Cup of Nations final, where Senegal players walked off the pitch after a late penalty decision favored Morocco.

World Cup 2026 Timeline

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, and will be the first edition hosted across three countries.
