Gianni Infantino has dismissed all safety concerns and rejected calls to relocate Iran’s World Cup matches, confirming that the team will compete as originally scheduled despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Speaking during halftime of Iran’s friendly match against Costa Rica in Antalya, Turkey, Infantino reaffirmed FIFA’s position that tournament fixtures will proceed according to the official draw. “Iran will be at the World Cup. The matches will be played where they are supposed to be,” he told AFP.
The decision comes amid heightened tensions due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the U.S.-Israel alliance. The situation has raised global concerns over safety and security for participating teams, particularly those scheduled to play in the United States.
In recent weeks, the Iranian football federation had reportedly sought to negotiate with FIFA to relocate its group-stage matches to Mexico on security grounds. Claudia Sheinbaum had also expressed willingness to host Iran’s fixtures, should relocation be approved.
However, FIFA has maintained its stance, emphasizing that all matches will follow the pre-established tournament structure. Infantino’s presence at the friendly match—without prior announcement—came shortly after his earlier remarks suggesting that Iran should consider not traveling to the tournament “for their own life and safety.”
Despite this, Iran has firmly rejected any suggestion of exclusion. Iranian officials stated that no entity has the authority to bar their national team from participating in the World Cup, reaffirming their commitment to compete on the global stage.
The development underscores FIFA’s effort to uphold tournament integrity and avoid political interference in international football. At the same time, it highlights ongoing concerns about player safety as global tensions continue to influence major sporting events.
As preparations for the World Cup continue, FIFA is expected to monitor the situation closely while ensuring that all participating teams are provided with necessary security and logistical support.
