Pakistan’s automotive sector is buzzing after the first all-electric Toyota Hilux Travo-E was recently spotted at a dealership in Karachi.
While this unit appears to be a private import and not an official launch by Toyota, it has sparked excitement about the future of electric pickup trucks in the country.
For decades, the Hilux has been a dominant force in Pakistan’s pickup segment, known for its durability and off-road capability.
However, shifting consumer preferences toward plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and electric vehicles (EVs) have gradually reshaped the market.
Modern buyers now demand better fuel efficiency, lower running costs, and advanced technology—areas where traditional diesel pickups have struggled to keep up.
The eighth-generation Hilux, introduced locally in 2016, maintained strong sales but saw only incremental upgrades over time.
Meanwhile, competitors began offering more advanced features, slowly eating into Hilux’s market share.
Recognizing this shift, Toyota globally unveiled the ninth-generation Hilux lineup in November 2025, featuring the brand’s first-ever battery electric vehicle (BEV) variant.
What Makes the Electric Hilux a Game-Changer?
The Hilux BEV prototype, currently showcased in markets like Thailand, highlights a major technological leap.
It features a 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery, delivering a driving range of over 300 km on a single charge.
With a 144 kW output and permanent all-wheel drive (AWD) system, the electric Hilux promises strong on-road performance along with serious off-road capability.
Equipped with advanced eAxle technology at both front and rear, the pickup produces 205 Nm torque at the front and 268 Nm at the rear, ensuring superior traction in rugged terrains—an essential feature for Pakistani users.
The battery is strategically mounted under the frame, lowering the center of gravity and improving stability without compromising cabin or cargo space.
Toyota has also reinforced the chassis with impact-absorbing materials, making the vehicle suitable for tough conditions.
Charging and Practicality
The electric Hilux supports 150 kW DC fast charging, enabling a 10–80% charge in around 30 minutes.
For home use, AC charging can fully recharge the battery in approximately 6.5 hours.
Smart charging features also allow users to schedule charging during off-peak hours—an attractive option amid rising electricity costs in Pakistan.
Will It Launch in Pakistan?
As of now, there is no official confirmation from Toyota regarding the launch of the Hilux BEV in Pakistan.
However, its arrival—even as a private import—signals a potential shift in the country’s pickup market.
If introduced locally, the electric Hilux could redefine the segment by combining Toyota’s trusted reliability with cutting-edge EV technology. The big question remains: Is Pakistan ready for an electric pickup revolution?
